Critter
Critters are small creatures that can be caught in the wild with a Bug Net or a Fishing Rod. Critters have different uses based on their type: they can be placed into machines to produce items, used in quests, donated to the Museum, or sold for gold. Some critters can be bred in a Critter Terrarium, attracted with the Artificial Sunflower, or found by the player's Pets.
Critter types
Several types of critters exist in the game:
- Bees and Pink Bees are a small flying critters that can be placed into a Bee Hive to produce Honeycombs and Pink Honeycombs respectively.
- Silkworms are small white worms that can be placed into a Silkworm Farm to produce Silk Cocoons.
- Soot Puffs are special critters that can be donated to the Soot Puff tank in the Museum for unique rewards. Soot Puffs cannot be bred but can be placed into a Soot Grower to increase their size.
- Dragonflies can be caught in the wild or bred in a Critter Terrarium.
- Small Dragonfly Nymphs, Dragonfly Nymphs, and Giant Dragonfly Nymphs can be caught while fishing or by breeding dragonflies in a Critter Terrarium.
- Flutterflies can be caught in the wild or bred in a Critter Terrarium.
- Small Caterpillar, Caterpillar, or Giant Caterpillar and Small Cocoon, Cocoon, or Giant Cocoon can be caught in the wild or obtained by shaking full grown trees or by breeding flutterflies in a Critter Terrarium.
- Frogs can be caught in the wild or bred in a Critter Terrarium.
- Small Tadpoles, Tadpoles, and Giant Tadpoles can be caught while fishing or by breeding adult frogs in a Critter Terrarium.
Obtaining and spawning
Most critters spawn in the wild on the overworld map each morning. Currently, critters are not seasonal and are not affected by weather or time of the day: they spawn in the morning and spend their whole day moving around on the map section they have spawned in until they are caught or despawn when the day ends.
For regular critters, the chance to spawn depends on the map section; if a critter spawns, there is a 35% chance for it to be a flutterfly, 33% chance for a dragonfly, and 32% for a frog.
Other critters like bees and silkworms are spawned separately. There is a 15% chance to get one of them to spawn on the ground on one of the map sections every morning, with the chances for each critter type to appear being the following:
Other sources
Most critters can be obtained from sources other than natural spawns on the map. Soot Puffs are the only critter that can only be caught in the wild.
Shaking trees
A full grown tree (except Cherry Blossom Trees) can be interacted with to shake it to get a critter. Every tree has a 6% chance to have a critter in it on any given day; that chance is rolled for in the morning and will not change during the day even if a tree is shaken repeatedly. The player can only get one critter per tree, with the critter being the following:
Bees obtained by shaking trees need to be caught with a bug net, caterpillars and cocoons can be picked up immediately.
Fishing
Dragonfly Nymphs and Tadpoles are critters that can only be caught while catching fish shadows with a fishing rod. The player has a chance to get one with or without the fishing minigame on. The chances to get one of these critters when fishing are listed below.
Critter Terrarium
Critters can be bred for and raised in any Critter Terrarium. A free terrarium for public use is available at the start of the game in the lobby of the Museum; the player can also craft as many terrariums as they need and place them on their farm.
Artificial Sunflower
Artificial Sunflower is a Museum reward that can be used to attract Bees and very rare Pink Bees after it is placed on the player's farm. The sunflower will attract regular bees naturally; however, to attract pink bees, the player needs to coat its leaves with Cherry Blossom Syrup first.
Pigeon Friend
The player's Pigeon Friend pet will occasionally peck for worms and caterpillars if it is following the player. The pigeon can only get one critter once per day with the chances for each individual critter being the following:
Silkworm (66.67%)
Small Caterpillar (16.67%)
Caterpillar (11.11%)
Giant Caterpillar (5.56%)
Catching
Critters can be caught with a Bug Net (crafted with 10 Wood and 5 Grass Fibre) or with any fishing rod. To catch a critter with a net, the player needs to hold the net in their hands, approach the critter, and swing the net at it by pressing use button. To catch a critter with a fishing rod, the player has to cast and aim the rod so the bobber lands on the critter. Once caught, the critter can be put into an inventory slot or left on the ground.
Catching each type of critters with a fishing rod at least once grants the player Fishing for Critters achivement.
